What you will learn

Module 1

Participatory Action Research with Young People

Participatory Action Research turns young people from subjects of research into co-researchers and agents of change. This module takes you through the philosophy, the five-phase cycle, the benefits, the very real challenges, and what four national teams actually found when they ran PAR on violence and marginalisation.

  • Explain what distinguishes PAR from traditional research and why that difference matters in youth work.
  • Apply the six core principles of PAR, and recognise equitable power-sharing as the condition that holds them together.
  • Plan and facilitate all five phases of the PAR cycle with a group of young people.
  • Anticipate relational, methodological and ethical challenges, and choose realistic mitigation strategies.

Module 2

Designing Effective Educational Escape Rooms

An educational escape room turns a topic into an experience people have to act their way through. This module takes you from learning objectives to puzzle mechanics, pacing, facilitation, accessibility and debriefing — and ends with you designing one of your own.

  • Explain what an educational escape room is and why it works as a non-formal learning method.
  • Write learning objectives specific enough to design puzzles from.
  • Design puzzles across at least seven formats that carry the educational content rather than decorating it.
  • Structure the four phases of the experience and manage time, difficulty and hints.

The course is designed for youth workers, trainers, teachers and facilitators. Everything you need is inside — no prior experience with research or game design is assumed.
